As the author, how would you describe your book?
Sunny Side Up is a sexy, action-packed, supernatural thriller with a very colorful mix of characters. The setting is my home town of San Antonio, Texas, and there's so much local flavor, you'll be craving Mexican food and Margaritas before you're done. It's definitely a wild ride, so hold on to your britches.
Can you tell us the behind-the-scenes story about how Sunny Side Up came into being? What was the germ? How did the characters come to life? Is there a character who still lives inside of you?
I am a prolific reader, and the authors I am partial to just can't write as fast as I can read. So, I decided to write my own story to fill my imagination with characters and scenes that I would normally get from a good book. Sunny, of course, is my favorite character. She says and does the things I'd sometimes like to, but don't dare. She is totally feminine, but can be tough as nails when necessary.
My goal is to entertain others with a great story and a cast of characters whose shoes they'd like to fill, if only for a little while. Most of us don't really want to battle demons or have the responsibility of postponing the destruction of the world, but is sure is fun to pretend.
Can you tell us something about you as a writer, i.e. when you started writing, what's your creative process is like, what inspires you, etc.?
I've always wanted to be a writer. I started writing as a kid as a way to express my fantasies and feelings. Nowadays, it's how I relax. I do most of my writing outside at night under the stars when my kids are in bed and most normal people are sleeping.
How do you keep a balance between family, work, and your writing?
Family always comes first, and work, although I enjoy it, is just a means to an end. Writing, however, is one of my greatest pleasures. After the daily chores are done and the kids are down for the night, I power up my laptop and head out to the back deck to live vicariously through my characters.
Can you tell us something about you as a person?
I always have too many irons in the fire, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I prefer outdoors to indoors, and would rather clean a barn than a kitchen. I am forever rescuing stray dogs and cats that have been dumped along the country roads near my home, and I always carry pet food and water in my vehicle for just such emergencies. Because of this, my friends have jokingly dubbed me the 'Mother of All Creatures.' If ever I am late to a function or event, you can bet there's an animal rescue involved.
If you had a chance to be mentored by one author (living or dead), who would you choose and why?
I guess if I had to choose only one, it would be John, the author of Revelations. That guy really knew how to write a scary story.
Despite the wisdom that says you can't take it with you, if you could take four things with you when you leave this world, what would they be?
I plan on skidding into the afterlife with a Margarita in one hand and my favorite smokes in the other hollering, "Yeehaaaaa! What a ride!" But if I'm allowed two more things, it would have to be my 3 Doors Down CDs and a nice, big boom box so I can share the tunes.
What is your view of epublishing? What opportunities does it provide for you and for other authors? What do you think is the future of epublishing?
E-publishing is the wave of the future. Books are expensive to print and a waste of good trees. I'd much rather shop for a good book online, reading sample chapters at my leisure rather than having to spend hours in a bookstore. Besides, I love reading outside at night, and with an e-book on my laptop, I can. The biggest problem for me is that my screen attracts bugs.
What projects are you currently working on?
Currently, I am working on book two of the Sunny Acres Adventure series, called Over Easy, which is going to be even more action-packed and chock full of wild escapades. The story is set in New Orleans, where Marie Laveau once worked her voodoo magic, and where her descendants still do. In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, Evil is making a comeback at a time when The Big Easy has never been easier. But count on Sunny and her men to put a kink in Evil's plans, making it a bumpy ride for everyone involved.
